Mayor Kalmin Smith
Dr. Kalmin Smith was elected as Mayor on November 6, 2007. He has served on the City Council since 1998 being originally appointed to fill a vacancy
representing Ward 2. Dr. Smith was then elected to continue representing Ward 2 in 1999, and was re-elected in 2001, 2003 and 2005. Dr. Smith served as
Mayor Pro Tem from November 2005 to November 2006 as has served on the City Council longer than any other current member.
Dr. Smith was the former Treasurer for the Grand Ledge Area Emergency Services Authority, is a three-term Chairman of the Board of Chosen Vision, a local
not-for-profit group home for developmentally disabled women, a member the Grand Ledge Rotary and the Grand Ledge Area Chamber of Commerce, a Past
President of the Harmony Club, a past member of the Grand Ledge Downtown Development Authority where he served for six years, a Board Member of the Grand
Ledge Historical Society, a member of the Founding Committee for the first all-city St. Patrick's Day Parade (a neighborhood celebration downtown which has
become Mid-Michigan's largest St. Patrick's Day celebration with significant contributions to the local economy), a supporter of the Grand Ledge Opera
House Authority, an official Pooper Scooper (following the horses) at the City's Victorian Day Parades, a member of the Ledges Playhouse Restoration
Committee, a participant in Holiday Wishes (a Christmas musical presentation raising funds for the local food bank) and Mudges Follies, and a member of the
Grand Ledge Trinity Episcopal Church.
Dr. Smith is a founding Board Member of Harvest House, a free medical clinic in Lansing that received a "Thousand Points of Light" recognition from
President George H. W. Bush, a foster parent with his wife, Marsha, through the Ingham County Probate Court for ten years, a past Michigan State Chairman
of the Board for the American Heart Association, a three-term Chairman of the Lansing District Council on Ministries through the United Methodist Church, a
former Board Member of the Walter French Academy (a public academy chartered by Central Michigan University serving minority children in Lansing), an Eagle
Scout, a former Boy Scout Troop Chairman and Explorer Scout leader, a Tri-County (Eaton, Clinton, Ingham) Volunteer of the Year Award recipient, a member
of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, and recipient of a Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Sacred Heart/Calumet High School Alumni Association
in 2003.
Dr. Smith graduated from Calumet High School, Calumet, Michigan, where he was an athlete in football and track, and a Jr. ROTC officer. He received a B.A.
from Albion College in History, Economics & Political Science, a M.A. from Western Michigan University in political theory, and a Ph.D. from the University
of Cincinnati in political philosophy. Dr. Smith conducted two years of post graduate study in culture, religion and politics at the University of
Pennsylvania, and has attended seminars in Management & Administration at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Smith was born in 1944 and was raised in the Copper Country of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. He has been married to Marsha Cobb Smith for 40 years and
they have two children and three grand children. Dr. Smith retired in 2002 after thirty years with the State of Michigan in many capacities including
Acting Director of the Department of Labor and Senior Deputy Director of the Department of Consumer & Industry Services. Prior to 1973, he was a teacher
of politics and philosophy at Valley Forge Military College (Wayne, PA), Hanover College (Hanover, IN), and the University of Cincinnati. He was an
Adjunct Professor at Lansing Community College for 20 years and is the author of many publications in business and professional journals.
